The Netherlands are searching for a new national team coach after a disappointing World Cup campaign ended in a Round of 32 exit to Morocco on penalties in Monterrey.

Ronald Koeman’s side were criticised for abandoning the traditional attacking Dutch style, switching to a back five and ultimately failing to create enough chances against the North Africans.

In the aftermath, the 63‑year‑old confirmed he would not continue in charge of Oranje, accepting responsibility for the early exit and calling time on his second spell as head coach.

Announcing his decision, Koeman admitted that “we all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would make history. That didn’t happen. No one is more disappointed about that than I am. As head coach, you bear that responsibility.”

He went on to describe the tournament as “deeply disappointing”, but stressed his gratitude to the players and staff, adding that he now wants to spend more time with his wife, children and grandchildren and that stepping down “feels like the right and most natural decision.”

After initially telling reporters he would “reflect on my future” in the hours following the Morocco defeat, Koeman’s mind was made up within a day.

Attention has swiftly turned to potential successors, and former Liverpool boss Arne Slot has emerged as one of the leading candidates.

Last month, De Telegraaf’s Marcel van der Kraan suggested that Slot would be open to taking the job with his nation:

“If Ronald Koeman steps down after the World Cup…there is a vacancy at the Dutch national team,” Van der Kraan noted. “I think Arne Slot is very, very much up for that; he’s probably the ideal candidate.”

“He can play his Dutch style of football – the passing, attacking style, whatever you call it. I think the Dutch would be happy to have him.”

With Koeman now leaving, it seems this could be a situation to watch.
