Chelsea are looking to make a surprise move to sign Leeds United full-back Gabriel Gudmundsson. This is primarily to improve their defense as Xabi Alonso continues to orchestrate transfer moves.

Gabriel Gudmundsson turning heads at Leeds United

Gabriel Gudmundsson is one of the most exciting full-backs in the Premier League. Yet to truly make a name for himself, Gudmundsson looks like someone who has the potential to become a household name in football. The 27-year-old started off his career in Sweden, then moved to the Eredivisie and then made the big move to Lille in Ligue 1. Lille is where the Swedish full-back truly showcased his full abilities.

Gudmundsson then made the biggest move of his career as Leeds signed him from Lille back in July 2025. The deal was valued at approximately £10 million.

He has played 32 games in the Premier League, scoring and assisting once in a Leeds shirt. With Chelsea having a full-back crisis and Gudmundsson being an efficient fit, the transfer story is understandable.

How close is Gudmundsson to joining Chelsea?

Gudmundsson has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, with Chelsea being the most keen. The Blues identify him as a potential replacement for Marc Cucurella, who just made the move to Real Madrid. With Malo Gusto also likely to leave, the London club are in desperate need for defensive reinforcements. That is exactly why they are actively looking to sign Gudmundsson.

Leeds United are not in a hurry to let go of the Swede. They are very keen on retaining him and securing him for the future. Notably, Gudmundsson’s Leeds contract runs for three more years. That will give Leeds the upper hand during transfer negotiations.

With no official bids being placed by Chelsea for Gudmundsson, the defender was asked about the speculations. And he made sure he did not engage with the speculations while on national duty with Sweden at the World Cup.

“It is clear that it is a confirmation that you are doing something good, then of course all the focus is on the national team here, so that is all I can comment on. I’ve worked with him for ten years(his agent), he knows that when I’m here I want to wear this shirt and focus on that. So that’s what matters,”Gudmundsson said.

What are other potential signings Chelsea could make?

Chelsea will be looking at a new dawn next season. A hopeful, positive dawn after their miserable tenth place finish last season in the Premier League. It was miserable in every way possible as they had to switch managers mid-season as Enzo Maresca wanted to resign after an opportunity from Manchester City knocked on his door. Now the Blues have appointed former Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso as the new manager and he is already orchestrating a few transfer moves.

The Blues are very close to finalizing the signing of Marco Palestra from Atalanta in a deal worth over £43m. Other than this, Alonso’s side are targeting the likes of Maxence Lacroix, Valentin Barco and also Granit Xhaka in a surprising transfer story. There is a certain pattern one could notice in Chelsea’s transfer moves. They seem to target defensive reinforcements over attacking ones.

And that is understandable. Chelsea were defensively horrendous last season. So if they manage to successfully secure these defensive signings, especially the signing of Gabriel Gudmundsson, Alonso’s side could really challenge for Europe next season.
