All you need to know about the FIFA World Cup 2026 suspension rules

Declan Rice niggle: Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice sat out England's final group game against Panama primarily because he was nursing a minor fitness niggle. However, his absence also conveniently protected him from picking up a suspension after being booked during the previous match against Ghana.

Only two bookings: Defender Jarell Quansah was also cautioned during the 2-0 victory over Panama. This means that Rice and Quansah were the only two England players to pick up yellow cards in the tournament during the entire group stage.

Suspension rules explained: Accumulating two yellow cards usually results in an automatic one-match suspension. This standard disciplinary rule meant that both players were walking a tightrope heading into the knockout stages.

Timely group wipe: Fortunately for the Three Lions duo, they have now been handed a lifeline thanks to an update to the tournament rulebook. All single yellow cards are wiped clean at the conclusion of the group stage, giving every player a fresh start.

Avoiding knockout bans: This change is designed to prevent players from missing crucial knockout matches due to minor infractions accumulated during the opening games. It means both Quansah and Rice can now throw themselves into tackles without the immediate threat of a one-game suspension hanging over their heads.

Expanded tournament format: Because the World Cup 2026 features an expanded 48-team format, FIFA have carefully structured when these disciplinary slates are wiped clean. Following the initial reset after the group games, another amnesty will take place for all players immediately following the quarter-finals.

Protecting the final: This second wipe ensures that no player can miss the prestigious World Cup final by accumulating single yellow cards. Under these updated rules, only a direct red card offence in the semi-finals would cause a player to miss the showpiece event with suspension.

Crucial Wednesday clash: Rice is expected to start the round of 32 clash against DR Congo on Wednesday. However, Quansah has been ruled out through injury.
