Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole believes Granit Xhaka would be an ideal signing for the Blues, insisting the experienced midfielder could provide the leadership and winning mentality that the squad lacked throughout last season.
Chelsea have been linked with a move for the Switzerland international in recent weeks as the club continues to explore options to strengthen its midfield ahead of the new campaign. While reports surrounding Xhaka’s future continue to circulate, no agreement has yet been confirmed and discussions remain at the speculation stage.
Speaking about the reported interest, Cole argued that CHELSEA‘s youthful squad would benefit enormously from the arrival of a seasoned professional who has captained club and country and competed at the highest level for more than a decade.
‘He played nearly every game for Leverkusen and Sunderland. Will he play every game at Chelsea?’ Cole said. Will he still be a great leader if he isn’t on the pitch every game? I think he will. I certainly hope he will.
‘He wouldn’t be starting ahead of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, who for me are two of the best central midfielders in world football.
‘We’ll see if he ends up signing, but I like the fact that if he does, it is for sure a Xabi Alonso signing.’
Although speculation surrounding Xhaka’s future continues, there has been no official confirmation that Chelsea have submitted an offer or entered advanced negotiations.
Sunderland are understood to value the midfielder highly, and any move would likely require significant discussions between the clubs.
For now, the transfer remains one of the summer’s more intriguing rumours. However, Cole’s comments underline why many believe a player of Xhaka’s experience, leadership and composure could prove a valuable addition should CHELSEA decide to pursue the move in the weeks ahead.
