Xabi Alonso has wasted little time in making his mark at Chelsea.

Appointed earlier this month to spearhead the next phase of the BlueCo project, Alonso has been tasked with reshaping an expensively assembled but inconsistent squad and restoring Chelsea to regular Champions League contention.

His reputation for player development made him one of the most sought-after coaches in Europe, and the club’s hierarchy have moved quickly to back him in the market.

Now the Spaniard has officially sealed his first signing as Chelsea manager with the arrival of highly rated full-back Marco Palestra.

The Blues have agreed a package in excess of €50 million with Atalanta for the 21-year-old, who is viewed as one of Serie A’s standout young defenders.

The Italian is regarded as a versatile, two‑sided full-back, comfortable operating on either flank and capable of contributing both defensively and in the attacking phase.

What makes the move particularly notable from a Liverpool perspective is that Palestra was reportedly offered to several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool and Arsenal, as his representatives explored a switch to England this summer.

Palestra said of his new move:

‘A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world.’

‘I’m very excited to get started. I’ve felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me. I can’t wait to start, see all the fans, my team-mates and the manager.’

‘We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League.’

The Reds, now under Andoni Iraola, appear to have opted against pursuing him, presumably prioritising other areas of the squad and different profiles for their defensive recruitment.

Chelsea, however, seized the opportunity, outmuscling Inter — who were also keen but unable to match the London club’s financial proposal — and convincing Palestra to choose Stamford Bridge.
