Charlton Athletic have had a good few seasons has a whole club, with momentum building on both the men’s and women’s side of the operation.
The men’s side secured promotion to the Championship in the 2024/25 campaign, and managed to stay in the division last season.
The women’s side sealed a historic place in the Barclays Women’s Super League in May 2026, clinching promotion with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Leicester City.
And now the Championship outfit are looking to stay on an upward trajectory with the signing of former Liverpool defender Billy Koumetio.
Koumetio, 23, joins Charlton on a four-year deal after impressing in the Scottish Premiership, where he made 44 appearances for Dundee following a permanent switch from Liverpool in 2024.
The move marks a return to English football for a defender who first joined the Reds’ Academy from US Orléans in 2018, having previously come through the youth ranks at Lyon and FC Vaulx-en-Velin.
During his time at Liverpool, Koumetio made two senior appearances under Jürgen Klopp, including a Champions League debut away to FC Midtjylland in December 2020.
He later featured in a League Cup clash with Leicester City the following year.
The Frenchman also gained valuable experience on loan at Austria Vienna, USL Dunkerque and Blackburn Rovers before his permanent move to Scotland.
Koumetio said of the deal: “I’m very happy about the move here. The manager spoke to me about the vision that he has for the club and for the players as well. He spoke to me about how he wants me and the team to play, how I can adapt and how all those things will help me become a better person and a better player.
“When he spoke to me about the project he has for me, it was quite convincing. From that day when I spoke to him, I realised this was the best move I could make for my career.”
It follows former Liverpool academy players making moves in the Championship, with former winger Bobby Clarke completing a move to Derby County last month.
