Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie endured a brutal end to Ecuador’s 2026 World Cup campaign after being sent off in stoppage time against Mexico.
Sky Sports reported that Mexico’s 2-0 last-32 victory was sealed by goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez, before Hincapie’s night collapsed during a late confrontation with Santiago Gimenez at the Azteca Stadium.
The 24-year-old, whose permanent Arsenal move from Bayer Leverkusen formally began on July 1, was dismissed after a VAR review for covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent. TNT Sports reported that Hincapie became the second player at the tournament to be punished under FIFA’s new mouth-covering rule.
