Former Liverpool FC Women forward Katie Stengel has officially confirmed her retirement from professional football.
Stengel joined Liverpool in January 2022, scoring nine goals in the remainder of that season as she helped Matt Beard’s side win the FA Women’s Championship and secure promotion back to the top flight.
She added 10 goals in 27 appearances the following campaign as Liverpool established themselves in the Barclays Women’s Super League. The 34-year-old later moved on loan to NJ/NY Gotham FC in 2023, with the move made permanent later that year.
Stengel, who also changed her surname to Lampson, enjoyed a globe-trotting career featuring spells with clubs including Bayern Munich, Washington Spirit, Western Sydney Wanderers, Boston Breakers, Newcastle Jets, Utah Royals, Canberra United, Houston Dash, Valerenga and Crystal Palace.
Katie Stengel took to her Instagram page to announce her retirement. She said: “Soccer has been my guiding light for the last 30 years. It presented opportunities to see the world, meet life long friends, and grow as a person. Soccer helped me earn an education, become comfortable being uncomfortable in new environments, and challenge myself every day.
“My career took many unpredictable turns, reminding me to accept my lack of control. Consequently, I am most proud that I was able learned to find an internal motivation and confidence amongst the chaos.
“I created consistency through a commitment to being my best regardless of the circumstances. I’m hanging em up, proud of all that this career has brought me.
“The good, the bad, the highs and lows. I’ll always be thankful for the journey and cherish lessons learned. A special thank you to my family who rode the coaster with me, supporting no matter how far I traveled. And to anyone I crossed paths with, I hope the joys outweigh the stresses, and the love of the game takes you far.”
