Liverpool has been tracking a move to sign Sandro Tonali this summer, according to reports, but now seems likely to miss out on the midfielder to Premier League rivals Tottenham.
The Italian international has attracted interest from several teams throughout the transfer window, with Newcastle likely to sell in order to raise funds.
The 26-year-old has shown plenty of quality in the Premier League, capable of operating as a deep-lying midfielder, as well as featuring as a box-to-box option for the Magpies. Liverpool was among those interested in a deal, as Gazzetta dello Sport reported that the Merseyside outfit was considering a plan to land Tonali in the market.
It was quoted as a plan to "ruin" Tottenham's hopes of landing the Newcastle ace, with the Lilywhites most heavily linked with a switch for the midfielder.
However, that plan appears to have been foiled, as David Ornstein reports that Spurs have since reached an agreement with Newcastle to sign Tonali this summer for up to $132.8 million.

There is now an expectation that the star will make the switch to North London, leaving Liverpool looking elsewhere in the market for potential midfield additions.

Exits could come in that position first, as Curtis Jones has been linked with a transfer to Inter Milan, following a first offer from the Serie A side being rejected.
Alexis Mac Allister's future has also come into question, as the Argentina star enters the final two years under contract at Anfield.
Any moves for them could raise transfer funds that can be spent by Liverpool in the central ranks, with several different options seemingly on the club's shortlist this summer.
Most prominent of all has been Alex Scott, who has been rumored to be in with a possible reunion with Andoni Iraola, having impressed under the head coach during their time together at Bournemouth.

As the Cherries look to tie the midfielder down to a new contract, Liverpool has also been linked with Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, and Real Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga.
It remains to be seen whether any of those options will join as part of the roster shake-up at Anfield, as Iraola looks to inject some more energy for his high-pressing style.
