Arsenal make 'fresh enquiries' to sign £80m-rated midfielder as Leeds 'ahead' of Aston Villa in …

The latest Premier League transfer news as Arsenal, Chelsea, Leeds United, Aston Villa and more seek out summer signings

July is here, which means we’re under two months away from the new Premier League season starting. The 2026/27 campaign is shaping up to be an intriguing proposition, with a joint-record seven clubs set to begin proceedings with a new manager in charge. Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City are among the high profile clubs to have rolled the dice heading into the new season.

Meanwhile, transfer business in England’s top tier is starting to intensify, with the likes of Brighton, Tottenham and Newcastle United already welcoming new arrivals. Things are going to ramp up a level or two once the World Cup concludes in North America, too, when elite footballers return their full focus to their club duties.

We’ll kick off today’s transfer rumours update at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea are pushing hard to sign a new left-back, after seeing the haystack-haired Marc Cucurella depart to Real Madrid. The Blues are looking to Spain for his replacement, and football transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has given an update on the situation via his X account.

Romano claimed: “Chelsea have agreed personal terms with Pep Chavarria as new left back, green light from the player. Chavarria wants Chelsea and wants to play for Xabi Alonso. Club to club talks underway with Rayo Vallecano and deal close.”

The 28-year-old was part of the Vallecano side who stormed their way to the Europa Conference League final last season, before ultimately losing to Crystal Palace. He’s expected to battle for a starting spot with Jorrel Hato, who impressed during the second half of the season with Chelsea after a rocky start to life at the club.

The 3AM Verdict:The Blues desperately need some more experienced players at the club, and Chavarria does fit the bill in this regard. Signing a player who’s not an instant starter is surely a step down from Cucurella, however, who’s widely regarded as one of the best in his position. Perhaps it’s the case that the Blues are looking to spend their money on more expensive options in other positions, with Chavarria likely to cost much north of £15m.

Arsenal ready to up the ante in Scott race

Next up, it’s over to the Emirates Stadium, where Arsenal are hoping to freshen up their midfield options. The Gunners are said to have already had an enquiry for Bournemouth’s Alex Scott knocked back, but Team Talk claim they’ve not been deterred, and could look to come again with a fresh bid to test the Cherries’ resolve.

The story says that the Gunners have joined Liverpool and Manchester United in the race to sign the 22-year-old. Despite Bournemouth’s apparent reluctance to let their star man go, the report claims that an offer in excess of £80m could be enough to tempt them. United could provide Arsenal with stiff competition, however, after missing out on their top target Mateus Fernandes, who is set to join Spurs instead.

The 3AM Verdict: Scott is a top class player, and it probably won’t be long until he’s a regular in the England squad. We see the classic ‘we’re not selling, no way!’ lines every summer, but we all know it’s just a ploy to drive up the player’s value. The Bournemouth gem would be an ideal signing for Arsenal, and a cheaper alternative to Morgan Rogers.

Leeds United could beat Villa to Japan gem

Last but not least, we’re heading off to Elland Road, where Leeds United are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper. Football Insider say that the Whites are “currently ahead” of Aston Villa in the race to sign Parma stopper Zion Suzuki, who shone at the World Cup for Japan before their round of 32 elimination at the hands of Brazil.

The story says that Leeds are in the best position to sign Suzuki, with Villa still unsure whether starting stopper Emi Martinez will leave. He’s likely to be involved in the World Cup for a while yet, which could give Daniel Farke’s side the perfect opportunity to nip in ahead of the Villans and seal the deal. However, there’s no indication in the report of how much Suzuki would cost, or whether he would be willing to make the move to Elland Road.

The 3AM Verdict: Suzuki is a highly underrated goalkeeper, and would be a real upgrade on the options Leeds currently have at their disposal. It’s a difficult situation all round, however: being Villa’s number one and playing Champions League football next season would objectively be a better move than joining Leeds, but Suzuki can’t afford to wait around too long to find out whether they’ll need him. If the Whites can persuade him to move quickly and forget about Villa, they could seal themselves a serious coup.
