Sunderland have been credited with an interest in Pape Gueye amid fresh Brian Brobbey claims after the Netherlands’ World Cup exit
Sunderland have been credited with an interest in Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye as Everton prepare for a potential midfield reshuffle.
The Senegal international is reportedly under consideration at Goodison Park, with Idrissa Gana Gueye now officially a free agent after the expiry of his Everton contract. The 36-year-old remains away on international duty with Senegal at the World Cup and Everton could yet reopen talks over a new deal once his tournament is over.
Everton are also expected to complete the signing of Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, with an initial £16.5million deal reportedly agreed. However, Gueye’s departure could still leave David Moyes’ side looking for another midfield addition.
According to TEAMtalk, Villarreal’s Pape Gueye is among the players being considered by Everton. The 27-year-old joined the Spanish side from Marseille in 2024 and has since become an important figure in LaLiga, operating both as a defensive midfielder and in a more box-to-box role.
The report adds that Everton’s interest is genuine, though they are not alone. Crystal Palace, Brighton and Sunderland are also said to be keeping tabs on Gueye’s situation after an impressive campaign and strong World Cup performances for Senegal.
Elsewhere, Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey has been linked with a possible move to Juventus by Tuttomercatoweb. The Italian outlet claims Brobbey has been offered to Juventus as the Serie A giants continue their search for attacking reinforcements. The report suggests the Dutchman could be viewed as an alternative to Randal Kolo Muani, with a fee of between £30.1million and £34.4million said to be enough to start a conversation.
That figure, though, feels difficult to believe from a Sunderland perspective. Brobbey only arrived on Wearside last summer, and his importance to Sunderland goes well beyond goals. He was signed to be a key part of the club’s Premier League project, and any suggestion that Sunderland would entertain such a deal would need to be treated with caution at this stage.
It also feels particularly hard to imagine Sunderland offering their star striker around in the middle of the Granit Xhaka transfer saga, when the club are already dealing with major uncertainty around one of their most important players.
Tuttomercatoweb’s valuation also appears presumptive, given it does not seem to fully account for Brobbey’s status, importance or contract situation at the Stadium of Light. If Sunderland were ever forced into a serious conversation, it would be reasonable to assume the asking price would be significantly higher than the £30.1million to £34.4million range being suggested.
Brobbey is now set to return to Sunderland after the Netherlands were knocked out of the World Cup, bringing an end to his impressive international summer. The striker enhanced his reputation with his performances on the biggest stage, and that has inevitably led to fresh transfer noise, including links with Juventus. Sunderland, though, will be hoping to quickly reintegrate one of their key attacking players as attention turns back to pre-season and the Premier League campaign ahead.
