Arsenal legend urges club to sacrifice one of two key men to facilitate deal for ‘dangerous’ Man Utd man this summer

David Seaman would love to see his former club, Arsenal, facilitate a deal for Marcus Rashford this summer.

However, there’s an acceptance that in order for the Gunners to do so, either Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard would have to be sold.

Marcus Rashford sees Barcelona hopes vanish after loan deal ends

Throughout 2025/2026, it was anticipated that Manchester United’s former No.10 would be signing for Barcelona permanently upon the culmination of his loan spell – until the Catalan giants let his £26 million buy option expire without activating it.

Barcelona also agreed a £70m deal for a like-for-like Rashford replacement in the form of Anthony Gordon, essentially setting in stone that they had no plans to shell out a fee for the on-loan Red.

It was subsequently revealed that his contract contains a release clause worth £40m for any club except arch-rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

Would Rashford consider joining the Gunners?

Arsenal have been linked with Rashford already this summer, so they will likely be keeping a close eye on how he’s faring at the World Cup with England.

To sign such an experienced and Premier League-proven player, who’s still only 28, for £40m in today’s market would be an enticing coup for any side.

Rashford’s PL record for United

As for Rashford himself, it remains to be seen how he would feel about representing Arsenal after spending 21 years on the books at Old Trafford.

What Seaman had to say about Rashford

Either way, Seaman is in support of the potential move.

When directly asked about the prospect of the Carrington graduate joining the North London outfit before deadline day, he said on The Good, The Bad & The Football: “Yeah, I would because I still think Rashford’s got a lot to offer. You know, he’s still very dangerous when he’s on it.

“But then straight away my head goes, who’s he going to replace? We’ve got Martinelli and Trossard.

“If they [Arsenal] sign Rashford, they’re probably going to get rid of one of those two, and at the moment it’s tough when you’ve just won the league to start then selling the players that have actually won that league with you.

“Yeah, that’s going to be tough. So, whether that happens or not, I still think it would be an improvement, but it’s only if one of the two leaves the club.”
