Newcastle agree £43m deal for Liverpool winger target

Liverpool’s list of attacking targets this summer could reduce further with Hoffenheim’s Bazoumana Toure looking set to join Newcastle for £42.8 million.

Toure, the 20-year-old Ivorian, has been linked with a move to Liverpool for a number of months, with Sky Germany reporting their interest in April.

But it does not appear likely that a deal will be pursued, with widespread reports on Wednesday night revealing a fee has now been agreed with Newcastle.

The Athletic‘s David Ornstein and the Telegraph‘s Luke Edwards were among those to cover the developments from St James’ Park, with Sky Germany explaining that the package is worth €50 million (£42.8m).

Toure is set to undergo a medical within the next 48 hours before signing a long-term contract.

Why Newcastle will hold concern over Liverpool’s interest

Edwards does, however, write on X that “until it’s done it’s not done,” no doubt referencing Newcastle‘s many failures in the transfer market in the last year.

Two of those involve Liverpool, with Hugo Ekitike turning down a switch to the northeast last summer while a deal for Victor Munoz emerged at the last hour after Newcastle believed they had wrapped up a transfer.

Given there is known interest in Toure from Anfield there will be concerns from Tyneside that the right winger could still be poached before he puts pen to paper.

It seems unlikely, with Munoz already signed and Liverpool expected to look elsewhere for their Mohamed Salah replacement, but it is certainly interesting that the two clubs are largely exploring the same pool of talent.

Newcastle were also credited with an interest in two further Liverpool targets in Koln’s Said El Mala and Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo, while a third, Brighton‘s Yankuba Minteh, is a former Magpies player.

Those on Merseyside found themselves in a similarly chastening situation last week with credible reports that priority candidate Yan Diomande prefers a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool had already tabled an unsuccessful bid worth €100 million (£86.6m) and were positioned as the most likely destination for Toure’s Ivory Coast team-mate.

But they are now set to assess other options with PSG’s own Bradley Barcola high on their list of targets in a merry-go-round of wingers this summer.
