Bournemouth midfielder Marcus Tavernier is a target for Liverpool, according to reports.

It was probably somewhat inevitable that the Reds would be linked with some of Andoni Iraola’s former players.

However, most would have assumed that the Basque would be asking for the likes of Junior Kroupi, Rayan, or even Alex Scott to be brought to Anfield.

TEAMtalk claim that Tavernier is, in fact, the one likeliest to make the switch to Merseyside. Iraola is said to have a “strong appreciation” of his talents.

Liverpool want to strengthen their midfield options

With doubts over the future of Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, sporting director Richard Hughes is thought to be looking at reinforcements in that area of the pitch.

An enquiry was made for Mateus Fernandes prior to Spurs agreeing a deal to sign him from West Ham. Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha, Juventus’ Khephren Thuram and Brighton’s Yasin Ayari have also been mentioned as potential targets.

Tavernier would, though, be a surprise addition. The 27-year-old did arguably have the best season of his career, scoring 8 goals in all competitions, the most he has managed in a single campaign at senior level. Even so, he is not a name that would get people off their seats.

There is competition for Tavernier

TEAMtalk reports that both Aston Villa and Fulham have already made formal enquiries about the former Middlesbrough player, while Liverpool and Newcastle are maintaining a watching brief.

For their part, Bournemouth have told suitors that Tavernier is not for sale, but they will have a challenge keeping the squad together which finished 6th in the Premier League last season.

It doesn’t look like Liverpool are likely to step up their interest in Tavernier immediately, with other reports suggesting that any move for a midfielder is dependent on outgoings.
