Hayden Hackney has completed his move from Middlesbrough to Everton.
The midfield star has signed a five-year contract at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, after Boro agreed a deal with the Premier League side earlier in the week.
It is understood that the two clubs agreed on a fee worth around £25 million, with Boro set to earn around £17m of that up front.
Crucially, Boro have also negotiated a future sell-on clause into the deal, Teesside Live understands. The exact percentage is not known, but would see Boro profit further if Hackney is ever sold by Everton.
Such has been a common part of negotiations in the sale of key players in recent years, with Boro looking likely to profit further this summer from one too. If Morgan Rogers leaves Aston Villa, Boro will be due 20% of whatever fee they receive.
Hackney, meanwhile, departs Boro after spending 14 years at the club, rising from the youth ranks to become a first-team star who was voted Championship Player of the Year last term.
Though Boro would have loved to keep the 24-year-old, Hackney had just one year left on his contract and had made his aspirations to be a Premier League player clear. He’d given Boro an extra 12 months last term, rejecting a move to Ipswich Town last summer to try and achieve promotion with his boyhood club.
Hackney had interest from multiple Premier League clubs this summer, but it’s understood Everton were always his preferred destination. Hackney cited Toffees boss David Moyes’ track record of developing young players as a big factor behind that.

On securing Hackney’s signature, Moyes told the Everton club website: “Hayden is a promising young player who we’ve been tracking for some time, and I’m looking forward to working with him.
“We’ve had a track record over the years of identifying players in the Championship who have gone on to do really well for us and been good investments. We hope that will be the case with Hayden, too.
“He’s an England Under-21 international who will provide greater competition in midfield, which is something I wanted going into the new season.”

A long statement on the club website detailing Hackney’s storied Boro career said: “The 24-year-old joins the Premier League club to open up a new chapter in his flourishing career.
“The Sky Bet Championship Player of the Year makes the move after another outstanding season in a Boro shirt. Everyone at Middlesbrough FC wishes Hayden all the very best for the future.”
