Rayo Vallecano have turned down an offer from Chelsea for left-back Pep Chavarria and are now considering reporting the Premier League club to FIFA over their approach, according to reports. Rayo president MartÃn Presa has reportedly cited the defender’s €50 million release clause, while denying that any formal negotiation with the London club currently exists.
The Madrid-based outfit appear determined to dig their heels in and insist that any interested party must respect the valuation placed on one of their most important performers. Chelsea have been looking for a new left-sided defender since selling Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for around €50 million earlier this window.
Xabi Alonso, who officially began his tenure at Stamford Bridge on July 1, is said to have identified the 28-year-old as the man to fill that gap. Earlier reports from Spanish outlets stated that the Blues had made a lowball opening offer of around €9m, which was swiftly rejected by Rayo. Vallecano have the advantage now that Chavarria is locked down for another four years, and they are well within their rights to demand a much higher price.
Chavarria had a great last season, with Rayo reaching the Europa Conference League final and the 44 appearances in all competitions, providing one goal and three assists. He was one of the best fullbacks in La Liga in terms of possessions won and defensive duels won.
Chelsea Reach Personal Terms with Chavarria as Standoff with Rayo Deepens
Reports in England suggest Chelsea have already made real headway on the personal side of any deal despite the growing tension between the clubs. The Blues have already agreed personal terms with Chavarria, and the player is said to be totally committed to a move.
The player reportedly prefers a move to Stamford Bridge and is keen to work under Alonso, whom he knows from their time in Spanish football. Chavarria only caught Chelsea’s eye after Alejandro Grimaldo, Alonso’s preferred option, opted to join Atletico Madrid. That sequence is why the Blues moved quickly to lock down the Rayo man’s willingness to relocate.
The Spanish side initially quoted them over €20 million, and Chelsea are expected to come in with a better offer. But for now, Vallecano’s resistance means this deal is still some way from being completed anytime soon.
