Chelsea Complete£47 Million Marco Palestra Signing

Chelsea have signed Marco Palestra from Atalanta in a deal worth around £47 million. The fee starts at over £43 million, before add-ons. The 21-year-old defender becomes the first major signing of the Xabi Alonso era at Stamford Bridge, agreeing a six-year contract with the option of a further season.

The Blues clearly acted with impressive pace to seal the deal, seeing off Italian giants Inter Milan to the signature of the player after the Nerazzurri had long been regarded as heavy favourites. Palestra will immediately join his new teammates for pre-season training ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.

Palestra said, in his first interview as a Chelsea player:

“We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League… It’s important for me to have Xabi Alonso as the manager.”

The right-sided defender arrives in London on the back of a superb campaign, having made 37 appearances on loan at Cagliari last term and registering one goal and four assists in Serie A. His performances earned him the Serie A Defender of the Year award, and he made his senior Italy debut in March, earning two caps for the Azzurri.

His versatility should be a great asset to his new manager, as he is at home on either flank, as a wing-back, and, of course, as a traditional full-back. His arrival also comes as a major relief for supporters, coming just after Marc Cucurella completed a £51.8 million move to Real Madrid.

The Xabi Alonso Chelsea Rebuild Is About To Speed Up This Summer

Palestra’s arrival is expected to be the first of several signings in west London, with Chelsea desperate to recover from a truly chaotic campaign. The Blues suffered a turbulent campaign that saw them finish 10th in the Premier League and miss out on Europe, and the club went through Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior before handing Alonso a four-year contract.

The former Bayer Leverkusen coach seems to be going for known, experienced professionals this time around rather than taking a punt on young, unproven signings. Alonso is said to want the best players with the ability to deal with the most difficult challenges the sport can throw up, just as he did successfully with Granit Xhaka in Germany.

Other targets are also believed to be on the club’s radar, including Sunderland’s Xhaka and Rayo Vallecano’s Pep Chavarria, with a commanding center-back and an authoritative goalkeeper understood to be priorities.
