Chelsea are all set to make the biggest bargain signing of the summer as Alonso’s side are looking to sign Dusan Vlahovic for free. This is after contract talks broke down between Vlahovic and Juventus.

Dusan Vlahovic and his Italian tenure

Dusan Vlahovic was heavily regarded as the next big thing. He was widely believed to be the next great striker. Vlahovic started off his career at Serbia initially. But Serbia was not the nation in which he made a name for himself. It was in Italy that the 26-year-old truly came alive. He made the move to Fiorentina back in 2018 and made his Serie A debut when he was only 18.

Vlahovic’s Serie A career stats, as per FOTMOB:

APPEARANCES GOALS ASSISTS

221 94 18

Vlahovic won the Serie A best young player award in the 2020-21 season after tearing the league apart. He scored 21 goals in the league in that particular season. After another extraordinary season with Fiorentina, the Serbian made the move to Italian giants Juventus. Vlahovic has scored over 50 goals for Juventus in the Serie A in 5 seasons. And now with his contract expiring, Chelsea are looking to secure his signature and make a statement move.

How close is Vlahovic to joining Chelsea?

The whole transfer story of Vlahovic leaving Juventus began because of a contract dispute between the player and the club. As his contract is expiring, Juventus tried renewing the contract by offering him £5 million per season. But the Serbian preferred a move to the Premier League citing higher wage possibilities in England. And this is where Chelsea came into the picture.

Chelsea actually pursued Vlahovic previously, exploring a paid transfer worth £50-70 million. But the breakdown of contract talks between the 26-year-old and Juventus has given them a golden opportunity to sign him for free now. At the time of writing, Juventus have basically accepted the fact that the Serbian will leave the club. And now Chelsea are leading the race to sign him because of them meeting his financial expectations. Moreover, the striker also fits new manager Xabi Alonso’s football setup.

Vlahovic truly has potential to replicate what Boniface did under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen. Both strikers share a very similar tactical profile and style of play. Alonso’s trademark 3-4-2-1 formation requires a strong presence in the box. Boniface famously did that and now Vlahovic could also replicate that presence.

What are other transfers Chelsea could make?

Xabi Alonso and his backroom staff have already started orchestrating transfers. Chelsea are already very close to finalizing a deal for Marco Palestra. He is a versatile full-back who can also be deployed in the midfield areas. The Blues are looking to finish the transfer from Atalanta in a deal exceeding £43 million.

The London club are also in talks with Rayo Vallecano to sign Pep Chavarria. As one could notice, Chelsea are predominantly looking to bring in defensive players. Especially full-backs. This is because of the surprise departure of key full-back Marc Cucurella. The Spaniard made the move to Real Madrid in a sensational transfer.

Furthermore, Chelsea were defensively poor last season. Multiple games were lost because of errors at the back. So it is understandable why Alonso is primarily looking to make defensive reinforcements first. Other than Cucurella, some notable names like Liam Delap and Enzo Fernandez could also depart the club.

After an embarrassing tenth place finish last season, Chelsea would definitely look to improve in the upcoming season and fight for a European spot.
