Jeremy Jacquet a blessing for Iraola – but LFC are gambling

Liverpool have just four senior centre-backs after the exit of Ibrahima Konate, and two are coming off season-ending injuries. Is that sufficient for Liverpool, Sam Millne asks.

“For next season, though, Liverpool have a key problem – and this applies to Giovanni Leoni, too – can we really expect youngsters to play 50 games a season?

“Especially two youngsters who have missed large parts of this season through shoulder and ACL problems, respectively.

“For some the answer will be, yes, if they are good enough then they are old enough.

“In modern football, though, rotation plays an important role, even at centre-half; the Reds will need more than Jacquet and Van Dijk to get through the season successfully.”

On this day in 2023, Dominik Szoboszlai signed from RB Leipzig as Liverpool looked to overhaul the midfield in what would be Jurgen Klopp‘s final season.

The Hungarian arrived in a deal worth £60 million and quickly had comparisons to Steven Gerrard emerge after electing to take on the responsibility of the No. 8 shirt.

He’s since played 147 times for the club, scoring 28 goals and assisting a further 24, having become an integral and versatile member of the team.

His contract will expire in 2028, and as he continues to flirt with Real Madrid, there will be plenty of speculation over his future in the year ahead.

For now, though, we look forward to seeing him deployed in Iraola’s setup.
