Victor Munoz arrived at the World Cup with an injury issue with many Liverpool fans eager to see him play for the first time as a Reds player.

Spain take on Austria in the World Cup Round of 32 this evening, a match they head into as the heavy favourites.

Munoz arrived at the World Cup already managing a calf problem that flared up in the closing weeks of Osasuna’s season, forcing him to miss matches and follow an individual recovery plan rather than joining full sessions.

After linking up with Spain in North America, he then suffered an additional muscular setback during that tailored programme, prompting fears he might miss the entire group stage and potentially the tournament.

As a result, the new Liverpool signing has yet to play a single minute at this World Cup.

That picture has now changed, with multiple outlets reporting a clear step forward in Munoz’s recovery ahead of the Austria tie.

Reuters report that the 22-year-old is contention to face Austria, reporting: “Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said his talent-rich squad was ready to face Austria in their World Cup last-32 match on Thursday with Lamine Yamal, Victor Munoz ‌and Yeremy Pino all available for selection.”

Spanish outlet Jornada Perfecta are reporting that the Liverpool‑bound winger has now completed full training with Spain for the second day in a row, having taken part in the entire session with his teammates.

Their report adds that, barring late surprises, Munoz should be available for minutes against Austria, with de la Fuente likely to manage his involvement carefully and consider a short cameo if the game state allows.

Last week, de la Fuente revealed that Munoz was recovering well, and it seems now he is all set to at least be in contention for tonight. The Spain boss also added that he feels that the new Liverpool signing can play a big role in his nation’s World Cup hopes.
