Arsenal transfer news: Mikel Arteta targets £60m Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa
Arsenal transfer news: Mikel Arteta has a specific type. If you have spent any time watching Arsenal evolve over the last few seasons, you know exactly what that type is. It is a defender who refuses to panic when the pitch shrinks, someone comfortable drifting into wide channels, and crucially, a player who possesses the tactical flexibility to plug multiple holes without a drop in quality. According to Telegraph journalist Matt Law, the Arsenal manager has found his latest obsession in Birmingham. He wants Ezri Konsa.
It is easy to understand the appeal. The 28-year-old is fresh off a monstrous campaign under Unai Emery, starting all 34 available Premier League matches and racking up over 3,000 minutes of top-flight football. He added another 12 appearances in Europe, scoring twice as Villa cruised to a 3-0 victory in the Europa League final on May 20. 134 clearances. A 26% clean sheet rate. The numbers tell a story of absolute reliability.
Money talks, but Villa have no reason to listen
Arsenal have a problem, though. A £60 million problem. That is the price tag floating out of Villa Park, and right now, executives at the Emirates have very little appetite to match it. Why would Villa blink? They made Konsa vice-captain in November 2025, right after a Europa League win against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Emery loves him.
He is under contract until June 2028 on a reported £75,000 a week. With a fresh European trophy in the cabinet and Champions League football secured, Monchi and the Villa board hold all the cards. They are under zero financial pressure to sell a core piece of their puzzle. You don’t hand the vice-captain’s armband to a player you are actively looking to shift in the summer window.
Then there is the question of where he actually fits in North London. William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães are arguably the best centre-back partnership in the country. They are completely locked in. Paying £60 million for a player entering his late twenties to act as premium cover is a massive luxury. It feels heavy-handed, even for a club with title ambitions.

Arteta is driving this interest personally. It is his target. Whether Arsenal actually pull the trigger and submit a formal bid before the deadline is a completely different matter.
