Fresh insight into Liverpool’s pursuit of Yan Diomande has shed new light on one of the summer’s most frustrating transfer stories.
Speaking via Anfield Index, Lewis Steele claimed that Liverpool were confident they would secure the winger’s signature before the move ultimately failed to materialise.
According to Steele, Liverpool’s optimism may have stemmed from the level of communication taking place between the club and the player’s representatives.
Liverpool’s Confidence
Steele suggested Liverpool genuinely believed they were in a strong position throughout the negotiations.
That confidence appears to have been reinforced by regular contact between the club and Diomande’s camp.
As Steele explained:
“Liverpool WERE confident that they’ll sign Diomande.”

He added:
“But I think Liverpool have been played by his agent because as far as I’m aware, speaking to Diomande’s camp, they were saying that they were speaking to Richard Hughes every day.”
If that assessment is accurate, it would suggest Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, was led to believe the club remained firmly in contention right up until the player chose another destination.
It is important to note that this reflects Steele’s interpretation of events rather than a confirmed account from Liverpool or the player’s representatives.
The Reality of Modern Transfers
Transfer negotiations are rarely straightforward.
Agents often speak with multiple clubs simultaneously while exploring the best possible opportunities for their clients.
That can sometimes leave clubs believing they are leading the race, only for the situation to change quickly.
