Man City set to hijack Arsenal's move for talented winger

Arsenal’s pursuit of Leicester City teenager Jeremy Monga has become more complicated after Manchester City entered the race for one of England’s brightest young talents.

The Gunners remain among the leading contenders for the 16-year-old’s signature after progressing in discussions over a potential move, but City have now made fresh enquiries as they look to rival Mikel Arteta’s side for the highly-rated winger.

Brentford and several other clubs have also monitored Monga’s development, although Arsenal’s interest is understood to be the most advanced at this stage.

The teenager has emerged as one of the most exciting academy prospects in English football after an impressive breakthrough season with Leicester.

Arsenal have been tracking Monga closely for some time and are keen to continue strengthening their academy with elite young talent.

Sporting director Andrea Berta has made youth recruitment a significant part of the club’s long-term strategy alongside reinforcing the Premier League-winning first-team squad.

That approach has already seen Arsenal recruit several highly-rated youngsters in recent windows while Max Dowman, Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly continue to demonstrate the pathway available to academy players in north London.

Manchester City, however, have long admired Monga and are now attempting to position themselves as genuine contenders before any agreement is reached.

The England youth international turns 17 this month, when his current scholarship agreement will convert into his first professional contract.

Any interested club must therefore negotiate a transfer fee with Leicester rather than relying on a compensation tribunal.

Leicester are believed to value Monga at around £10 million following his rapid rise through the club’s ranks.

The attacker gained valuable first-team experience last season despite the Foxes competing in the Championship.

He made 27 league appearances during the campaign and became the youngest goalscorer in Championship history, adding another milestone to an already remarkable start to his career.

Monga had also broken into Leicester’s senior side during the previous Premier League season, becoming one of the youngest players ever to appear in the competition.

Comfortable on either wing and capable of operating centrally, he is widely regarded as one of the country’s standout attacking prospects.

His pace, dribbling ability and confidence in one-versus-one situations have attracted scouts from across Europe.

For Arsenal, Monga represents another opportunity to secure one of England’s elite teenage talents before he reaches full senior prominence.

The club’s recent record of developing young players into first-team regulars could prove an important factor in the race.

City’s late move, though, ensures Arsenal will not have a clear path to completing the transfer.

With Monga’s first professional contract approaching, the battle for his signature is expected to intensify as two of English football’s biggest clubs compete for one of the game’s most exciting young prospects.
