Arsenal transfer news: Arsenal test Newcastle resolve for Bruno Guimarães
Arsenal transfer news: The transfer window has just been blown wide open. Sandro Tonali is off to Tottenham Hotspur in a staggering £100m deal that has left the market reeling and Newcastle United with a massive hole to fill. Roberto De Zerbi has his man, but the ripples from that deal are being felt all the way down the A1.
According to journalist Simon Collings, Tonali’s imminent departure completely changes the game on Tyneside. Newcastle aren’t broke. They don’t need to sell. With £100m dropping into the St James’ Park accounts, the club’s hierarchy suddenly holds all the cards regarding their remaining assets.
Arsenal, however, do not care. Mikel Arteta wants an elite presence in the engine room and believes he can still twist Newcastle’s arm. Reports suggest the Gunners are putting together a formal £60m package to test the waters. It is a bold, aggressive opening move, but whether it is enough to make the Magpies blink is another matter entirely.
Why Arteta is obsessed with the Brazilian
Look at the numbers from the 2025/26 campaign, and the pursuit makes perfect sense. Guimarães was superb last year, racking up a 7.52 average rating across 29 Premier League appearances. He managed nine major chances created for his teammates alongside a highly reliable 86.7% passing accuracy over the club season.
That creative output did not stop in May either, as he carried that elite form straight into the summer, providing key assists for Brazil during their recent group stage matches against Scotland and Morocco. He does not hide. He wants the ball, dictates the tempo, and unlocks defences.
Newcastle fans are understandably anxious. Losing one star midfielder is a blow; losing both in the same window threatens to derail the entire system. The St James’ Park board will almost certainly point to the £100m benchmark Tottenham just set for Tonali. They will argue Guimarães is worth every penny of that, if not more. Arsenal have the cash, but they also have a summer shortlist to consider, and £60m feels like a starting whistle rather than a closing argument.
