Several key details of Bruno Guimaraes’ Newcastle United contract have been revealed.
Newcastle United will face a battle to keep Bruno Guimaraes this summer.
Arsenal have made an approach for the Newcastle captain, who has two years left on his current contract at St James’ Park.
While the Magpies are adamant Guimaraes is not for sale, that stance will almost certainly be tested this transfer window, with Manchester United and Real Madrid also linked with the midfielder.
The 28-year-old joined Newcastle from Ligue 1 side Lyon in January 2022 when the club were sat in the Premier League relegation zone. He has since played a key role in helping the club initially stay up in the Premier League before twice qualifying for the Champions League, as well as ending a 70-year domestic trophy drought with the 2025 Carabao Cup win.
He is currently under contract at Newcastle until 2028 but The Gazette understands the club hold a one-year extension option. Reports from Brazil have claimed Guimaraes has a £60million release clause in his contract should Newcastle miss out on Europe but those claims have been disputed by club sources.
Bruno Guimaraes sell-on clause
Guimaraes joined Newcastle for an initial £35million which later rose to over £40million due to the club staying in the Premier League and going on to qualify for the Champions League. But the deal also included a significant 20% sell-on clause for Lyon should Newcastle ever sell the player.
That clause would entitle Lyon to 20% of any profit Newcastle make on the deal. For example, if Guimaraes was sold for £60million, Lyon would get around £4million.
If Newcastle were already adamant they will not be selling this summer, the sell-on clause only raises Guimaraes’ value to the club further. Which is bad news for the likes of Arsenal and any other interested parties.
