Mikel Arteta can spalsh the cash again this summer

Arsenal have yet to make their presence felt in this summer's transfer market. There was considerable speculation at the end of last season, following their Premier League triumph and Champions League final heartbreak, that the Gunners would look to spend significantly in the coming months.

Mikel Arteta was reportedly provided with a transfer chest of around £250million - the identical sum he splashed this time last year to dramatically strengthen his squad. However, apart from making loanee Piero Hincapie's deal permanent, Arsenal have remained relatively silent regarding actual new signings, particularly when compared to some of their competitors.

It seems sporting director Andrea Berta is simultaneously negotiating multiple deals for players on his wishlist. The English champions are believed to be focusing on a right-back, a midfielder, a left winger and possibly a striker. Here, the Daily Star Sport examines two of the most recent transfer developments involving Arsenal.

Why Arsenal snubbed Tonali

Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United, arrives at the ground prior to the Premier League match between Newcastle United and West Ham United at St James' Park on May 17, 2026 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Arsenal reportedly rejected the opportunity to sign Sandro Tonali before Tottenham Hotspur secured a £100m deal with Newcastle. The 26-year-old Italian is poised to become Spurs' second record acquisition of the summer, following Thursday's confirmation of Matheus Fernandes' arrival.

The development may have surprised some Arsenal supporters, considering their substantial transfer connections with Tonali since January. Berta had established contact regarding the player, with ChronicleLive reporting that his representative even presented Tonali to Arsenal.

Nevertheless, the same report suggests the Gunners declined the chance because they felt his wage demands were excessive. Tonali is believed to be in line for £275,000 per week at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on a six-year contract. His representative, Giuseppe Riso, also allegedly sought a 10% agent commission.

Following agreements for Arsenal midfield targets Tonali and Fernandes, Tottenham have reportedly shifted focus towards strengthening their attacking options. The Independent reports that Bournemouth's highly-regarded Eli Junior Kroupi tops their transfer priorities.

Roberto De Zerbi is said to be keen on finalising his dealings before pre-season commences. And Spurs are prepared to invest heavily once more to secure the 20-year-old, who carries a valuation exceeding £80m from the Cherries.

The Gunners will be eager to avoid losing another player to their fierce competitors, particularly as they require a left-sided forward of Kroupi's calibre. football.london reveals that Arsenal have been monitoring the Frenchman, who gifted Arsenal the title with a thrilling goal against Manchester City last season, for a while.
