Arsenal are reportedly prepared to step up their pursuit of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, with fresh reports claiming the Premier League champions remain determined to secure the Brazilian midfielder’s signature this summer despite the Magpies’ reluctance to sell.
According to the latest reports, Arsenal are considering an offer worth around £60 million as manager Mikel Arteta continues his search for midfield reinforcements ahead of the new campaign.
The Gunners have admired Guimaraes for several years, dating back to his time in Brazil and later during his spell at Lyon before Newcastle completed his move to St James’ Park in 2022.
Arsenal’s interest is understood to have intensified following an initial approach through intermediaries that was rejected by Newcastle. Reports suggest the north London club remain undeterred and are weighing up whether to return with an improved proposal as sporting director Andrea Berta explores options to strengthen Arteta’s midfield.
Newcastle, however, have maintained a firm stance that Guimaraes is not for sale. The Brazil international has become one of the club’s most influential players since arriving from Lyon, serving as captain and playing a central role in Eddie Howe’s side both domestically and in European competition.
Newcastle United‘ position has reportedly hardened further after already seeing significant changes to their squad this summer. Despite speculation surrounding several senior players, Newcastle are determined to retain Guimaraes as one of the cornerstones of the project at St James’ Park.
For Arsenal, the pursuit reflects Arteta’s desire to add further quality and depth to a midfield already featuring Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard.
The club have been linked with a number of central midfielders during the transfer window, but Guimaraes is believed to remain among their priority targets because of his Premier League experience, technical quality and leadership qualities.
Whether a fee in the region of £60 million would be enough to change Newcastle’s position remains uncertain. Reports indicate the Tyneside club value their captain considerably higher and have shown little willingness to negotiate, leaving Arsenal facing a difficult task if they are to persuade Newcastle to sanction one of the summer’s biggest transfers.
While discussions are said to be ongoing behind the scenes, no agreement has been reached between the clubs, and any move for Guimaraes remains at the speculation stage as Arsenal continue assessing their options in the transfer market.
