Jurgen Klopp official talks confirmed as Germany sack Julian Nagelsmann

The German FA have confirmed they will enter talks with Jurgen Klopp over their vacant manager role after announcing the sacking of Julian Nagelsmann.

Nagelsmann has been dismissed as manager of Germany following their exit from the World Cup with a penalty defeat to Paraguay in the round of 32.

An official statement on Friday morning announced that the 38-year-old’s contract had been terminated following a unanimous decision from the German FA (DFB).

The former Bayern Munich manager had already requested an exit and explained that “after such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the chance for a fresh start.”

That fresh start is expected to bring Klopp’s return to management, with the DFB confirming they will begin talks with the former Liverpool boss.

“Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp,” their statement reads.

“He has already signalled his general willingness to take on the position.”

Klopp is currently serving as a pundit at the World Cup for MagentaTV and is employed full-time as global head of soccer for the Red Bull group.

However, it is understood that there is a clause in his contract with Red Bull that would allow his immediate release in the event of an offer to become Germany manager.

While he appears to have distanced himself from returning to a day-to-day role in club football, Klopp has hinted in the past that he would be open to leading his country.

The 59-year-old left Liverpool after nine years in 2024 citing a lack of energy, and has seemed revitalised since – including on a return to the Anfield dugout for a Legends friendly against Dortmund in March.

If Klopp were to take the Germany job as is now likely, the Telegraph‘s Sam Wallace reported earlier this week that it may require a flexible arrangement.

Wallace wrote: “The terms of any agreement would have to be tailored to the needs of the 59-year-old who is unlikely to want to spend every weekend watching players perform on the circuit of Bundesliga and Premier League matches.”

There will be a close watching brief around Liverpool games, with Florian Wirtz positioned as one of the most important players in Germany’s present and future.

Speaking after Germany’s 2-1 win over Ivory Coast in the group stage, Klopp said: “I want Flo Wirtz to feel good.

“If I were Schlotterbeck, I’d just give him the ball five times for no particular reason and see what he does.

“If you really want Flo Wirtz to get into a rhythm, if you want the place to really be buzzing, then give him the ball, because that’s when the lad feels completely at home.”
