Carl Rushworth remains Coventry City’s priority despite reports that the club have turned their attention elsewhere.
The Sky Blues are widely reported to have had a £20m bid rejected for last season’s Championship Golden Glove winner who returns to his parent club Brighton this summer unless he secures a permanent move to the CBS Arena.
City are understood to be prepared to go higher and that the two clubs are continuing negotiations in a bid to reach a compromise figure for the goalkeeper.
Rushworth has made no secret of the fact that he would love to join Coventry as their player, knowing that he will be guaranteed regular first team football in the Premier League. The 24-year-old will be further encouraged to join the club after Frank Lampard committed his future to City this week by signing a new three year contract.
Meanwhile, the Sky Blues have been linked with “interest” in Everton and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Mark Travers, with transfer specialist Pete O’Rourke claiming that Coventry are “considering activating a release clause in his contract” at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
CoventryLive understands, however, that Rushworth remains the club’s top target and that they remain hopeful of getting a deal done.
The club clearly have to look at alternative options if they cannot reach an agreement with Brighton, and Travers may well be on their list.
Travers, who impressed on loan at Stoke and Middlesbrough in the Championship, has mostly been utilised as a second-choice goalkeeper during his time in the Premier League career, having been understudy at both Bournemouth and Everton.
The 27-year-old joined Everton from Bournemouth for £4million last summer and, claims O’Rourke, “any departure is likely to cost a similar fee if not more, with the Toffees likely to profit.”
So far Travers has made just two appearances, both in the Carabao Cup, for Everton where Jordan Pickford remains firm first choice stopper.
