Celtic have beaten off major English competition to sign Warren Lyall from Dundee.

The Scotland youth keeper has signed his first pro-contract with the Hoops. The Dark Blues are due compensation after losing their talented academy graduate.

Dundee tried to keep him but were fighting a losing battle with the growing interest in Lyall. It is a major coup for Celtic.

Lyall had a number of summer options. He had been on Arsenal’s radar. The 16-year-old had a training stint with the Gunners back in February.

Arsenal was among the clubs keen to sign him. Lyall was part of the Dundee team that reached the final of the Scottish Youth Cup a couple of seasons ago.

He also played for Dundee’s under-20 team in the Challenge Cup against Elgin City back in November. Lyall will go into the Celtic B team in the first instance, working under Johnny Hayes, Stevie Hammell and goalkeeping coach Colin Meldrum.

Celtic have also snapped up young defender Shea McGarry from Cliftonville.
