Jurgen Klopp looks to be closing in on his return to management with Germany - although that will mean him going back on a promise he made to Liverpool.

Klopp is the favorite to become his country’s new manager, with Germany seeking a replacement for Julian Nagelsmann. The 38-year-old resigned from his post following his side’s shock defeat to Paraguay in the last-32 of this year’s World Cup, leaving Germany without a knockout win since winning the tournament back in 2014.

The German football association (DFB) has wasted no time in going after Nagelsmann’s successor, having confirmed it will be holding talks with Klopp over the vacancy.

"Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp," a statement said. "He has already signalled his general willingness to take on the position."

Klopp has been out of management since leaving Liverpool in 2024, and - on numerous occasions - talked down the prospect of him making a return to the dugout.

The 59-year-old took up the role as Red Bull’s head of global soccer in January 2025, but he did return to the touchline earlier this year at Anfield. Klopp acted as an assistant to Sir Kenny Dalglish for the annual Liverpool Legends game back in March, with the Reds having faced another of the German’s former clubs in Borussia Dortmund.

Klopp has maintained a conncection with Liverpool through his role as an ambassador for the LFC Foundation, and after his first experience of the Legends game, he vowed to return for next year’s event.

“It was good,” he said on the experience of being back at Anfield. “Nothing really changed. I enjoyed every second.

“My role today was not to have a lot of words – I was here for the (LFC) Foundation and to be part of a really special experience after a while, seeing all the Liverpool and Dortmund lads, who you don't meet very often.

“Today it was really nice. The people suck it in. It was so nice to see the boys playing. Thiago alone was worth the ticket!”

Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.

And when asked if he would return next year, Klopp said: “Yeah!"

If, as it seems to be the case, he takes the Germany job though, Klopp will have to go back on his promise.

A return to management would obviously take up his time, and the Legends game at Anfield is always held during the March international break, when Klopp and Germany would be otherwise engaged.

Anfield may therefore have to wait longer for Klopp’s next visit, although with Florian Wirtz in the Reds’ side, we may see him in the stands a little more often now.
