Liverpool FC Women have been proactive after a season spent uncomfortably close to the wrong end of the Women’s Super League table.

Gareth Taylor’s side hovered around a relegation battle for much of last year before pulling clear late on, but the warning signs were clear enough to prompt a reset.

That reset has already seen the arrivals of Slovenia international centre-back Sara Agrež from Cologne and Germany forward Vivien Endemann from Wolfsburg, adding proven European quality at both ends of the pitch.

Liverpool have also secured a deal for 20‑year‑old full-back Mari Ward, who joins after starting 21 of Bristol City’s 22 league games in the Championship last season and can operate on either side of the defence.

Those signings, combined with multiple high-profile departures, underline a deliberate move towards a younger squad.

Among those exits is Wales international Gemma Evans, who has now officially joined Newcastle United Women.

The 29‑year‑old spent the last two seasons with Liverpool, making 39 appearances after arriving from Manchester United in August 2024, having won the Adobe Women’s FA Cup during her time at Old Trafford. Evans also previously represented Reading, Bristol City and Yeovil Town in the top flight, bringing a wealth of WSL experience to the Magpies’ project.

She has 85 caps for Wales and was part of their historic Euro 2025 squad.

On joining Newcastle United Women, Gemma said: “I’m happy this move is finally over the line. I’m over the moon, I’m looking forward to meeting the girls, meeting the fans and showing them what I can do.

“I think it’s a really exciting project to be part of and I can’t wait to get going.”

Manager Tanya Oxtoby said: “Gemma joins us with great experience both at club level and internationally with Wales. She is someone that I have worked with previously, so I know what she offers us on the pitch with her fight and determination, as well as her defensive attributes.

“She understands what it takes to play in the WSL, and that is where we want to be. I am looking forward to working with Gemma again.”
