Cody Gakpo’s World Cup may have ended in heartbreak for the Netherlands, but on an individual level it has quietly become a major turning point in his career with Fabrizio Romano providing an update on Tottenham Hotspur interest.

Coming off a flat 2025/26 campaign at Anfield, where he managed just 7 league goals and 5 assists in 36 appearances, Gakpo arrived in North America looking for answers and a reset.

He has largely found both on the international stage, scoring freely in the group phase and even finding the net against Morocco in the round of 32 exit.

Last month, reports from the Netherlands described Spurs as “seriously interested in Gakpo” and “working on a plan to convince the attacker and Liverpool in the coming period” as part of Roberto De Zerbi’s new project in North London.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has now backed up the feeling that Spurs are firmly in the conversation, but stressed that Liverpool are not yet pushing Gakpo towards the exit. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said:

“One thing I wanted to mention guys is Cody Gakpo. Keep an eye on Tottenham for Cody Gakpo.”

“Because they have interest in the player. As of today – beginning of July – are not opening doors to an exit, they are not telling Gakpo he can leave or telling Tottenham they are open to negotiations.”

Romano made it clear this is one to watch later in the window rather than an imminent move:

“This is not happening now. We have to see later on this summer, in case Tottenham really open talks by sending a proposal. At the moment there is an interest. If they send a proposal they have to see what happens there.”

“It’s a story to keep an eye on eventually, it’s not something guaranteed at this stage.”

With Gakpo under contract until 2030, any deal would require a sizeable bid and a major call from Iraola’s new regime.
