Arsenal have confirmed the appointment of Pascal De Maesschalck as the club’s new academy director following the departure of Per Mertesacker earlier this summer.
The 52-year-old will officially begin his new role on August 1 after leaving French side Strasbourg, where he has served as technical director since 2024.
His appointment ends Arsenal’s search for Mertesacker’s successor after the former Germany international stepped down following eight years overseeing the academy.
The Gunners had identified De Maesschalck as one of their leading candidates before holding talks over the role, with the Belgian now tasked with leading one of English football’s most respected youth systems.
Sporting director Andrea Berta welcomed the appointment and highlighted De Maesschalck’s extensive experience in youth development across Europe.
“We are delighted to welcome Pascal to Arsenal,” Berta said. “He brings extensive experience from some of Europe’s leading clubs and has an outstanding track record in youth development.”
“We are excited to have him with us as we continue building for the future and developing the next generation of players.”
De Maesschalck arrives in north London with an impressive CV built over nearly two decades working at some of Europe’s strongest academies.
Before joining Strasbourg, he spent three years as Monaco’s director of youth development.
His time in the principality coincided with the emergence of highly-rated talents including Maghnes Akliouche, Eliesse Ben Seghir and Soungoutou Magassa.
Prior to that, he enjoyed a hugely successful 14-year spell at Club Brugge.
He initially joined the Belgian club as director of youth development before becoming academy manager in 2011.
Several players who progressed through the academy during his tenure have since established themselves at the highest level, including Charles De Ketelaere, Lois Openda and Maxim De Cuyper.
At Arsenal, De Maesschalck will oversee every aspect of the academy programme.
His responsibilities will include developing young players, strengthening recruitment and ensuring the club continues to provide a clear pathway into first-team football.
The appointment comes at an encouraging time for Arsenal’s academy.
Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Max Dowman have all highlighted the strength of the club’s production line, while several other highly-rated youngsters continue to progress through the ranks.
Arsenal are also expected to place greater emphasis on maximising the value of academy graduates who do not ultimately establish themselves in the first team.
Improving loan pathways, managing contract situations more effectively and generating stronger transfer returns are all expected to remain key priorities.
De Maesschalck’s experience of working within different academy structures across Belgium, France and now England made him an attractive candidate as Arsenal continue investing heavily in every area of the football club.
His arrival represents another significant appointment behind the scenes as Arsenal look to ensure their academy remains among the very best in European football.
