Joules Kounde to Chelsea edges closer as Barcelona slash asking price
Chelsea’s summer rebuild is accelerating. Talks are already underway over a move for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix, with some reports in his homeland suggesting a £45m deal is already advanced, according to L’Equipe. Yet Xabi Alonso isn’t stopping there. The Joules Kounde to Chelsea story, a saga that dates to 2021, is alive again, and this time, Barcelona are actually willing to sell.
Barcelona are now open to letting the France international leave this summer, with their asking price dropping to £55m after previously sitting closer to £65–70m, as first reported via the Daily Briefing on CaughtOffside. Five years ago, Chelsea came agonisingly close to landing the 27-year-old from Sevilla, only for the player to choose Xavi’s project at Camp Nou instead. That decision shaped the next half-decade of his career. Now, it could be Chelsea’s turn.
Joules Kounde to Chelsea: What the numbers say
Koundé made 41 appearances across all competitions for Barcelona in 2025/26, contributing three goals and four assists as the Catalans finished seven points clear at the top of LaLiga. In La Liga alone, he featured in 30 matches, registered one goal, three assists, and kept 12 clean sheets, averaging 1.83 tackles and 1.24 interceptions per 90 minutes.
In the Champions League, he scored two goals and provided one assist across 10 appearances, including a brace against Eintracht Frankfurt at a renovated Camp Nou. He also scored the winning goal in extra time of the Copa del Rey final in 2025, securing a 3–2 victory over Real Madrid. Outstanding. That’s the word.
Joules Kounde to Chelsea: The bigger picture at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea’s defensive overhaul didn’t start with Koundé. The club confirmed the signing of Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra, named Serie A’s Defender of the Year last season, on a seven-year contract after agreeing on a €55m fee, making him Xabi Alonso’s first proper signing. A full agreement with Rayo Vallecano for left-back Pep Chavarria is also expected to follow, with Fabrizio Romano confirming personal terms have been agreed, as Alonso seeks to replace Marc Cucurella.

CaughtOffside’s sources indicate Chelsea’s interest in Koundé hasn’t disappeared, and the drop in his valuation could now invite more concrete action, though much depends on how the Lacroix pursuit develops and what happens with Malo Gusto. Koundé can play right-back or centre-back to a genuinely elite standard, which gives Alonso tactical options that few other defenders on the market offer. Chelsea’s backline has looked short of composure for too long. Koundé, composed and quick with the ball, would change that picture considerably.
