Switzerland's FIFA World Cup star Granit Xhaka has turned down an opportunity to sign for Chelsea in favour of remaining with Sunderland, as per reports. The experienced midfielder pointing was approached by the Blues, who sought to reunite him with manager Xabi Alonso.
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has revealed that the 33-year-old has decided against joining Chelsea due to a number of reasons. Sunderland were unwilling to sell their captain, and the former Arsenal man desires to lead the club to Europe in the 2026-27 season.
Xhaka left Bayer Leverkusen to join Sunderland last summer after Alonso left the German side, and quickly established himself as a stalwart for the Black Cats. They finished seventh in the Premier League, qualifying for the UEFA Europa League in their first season back in the top-flight.
The midfielder, who has played in every game for Switzerland at this summer's FIFA World Cup, played 34 times in the league for Sunderland in the 2025-26 season. His relationship with the Sunderland fans, who backed him after his move last summer, has also been meh in his decision to remain on Wearside.
Chelsea reportedly submitted a bid worth £8 million to sign the midfielder, who cost around twice that last summer. Their bid was immediately rejected.
