Marco Palestra has completed a stunning switch to Stamford Bridge, snubbing boyhood club Inter Milan to join Chelsea instead. As per the latest transfer news from Chelsea, the west London club have wrapped up a £47m deal for the wing-back, days into Xabi Alonso’s reign as manager.
How Chelsea Won the Race for Marco Palestra
The Blues moved fast to beat Inter Milan to Marco Palestra’s signature. They exceeded an early £43m offer with a package now worth around £47m, including add-ons. As reported by BBC Sport, the defender had already agreed to rejoin his boyhood club. However, Chelsea stepped in with a bigger financial package. A better wage offer ultimately convinced him to move.
He has signed a six-year deal, with the option of a further year. This ties him to Stamford Bridge on a long-term basis. The move marks the first signing of Xabi Alonso’s time as manager. It also shows the board’s intent, as they back their new head coach in the transfer market.
Speaking after the move was confirmed, Marco Palestra admitted that Alonso played a major role in his decision. As reported by BBC Sport, he said: “A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world.”He also praised the squad’s ambition and the manager’s game plan. “We can’t wait to compete in the Premier League,” he further added.
Who Is Marco Palestra?
Born and raised near Milan, Marco Palestra’s rise has been rapid. He went from Atalanta’s third-tier under-23 side to a Premier League move in just three years. His first-team bow for Atalanta came in the Europa League in December 2023, though real progress followed once he moved out on loan to Cagliari last season.
That loan spell brought him the Serie A defender of the year award. It also brought his senior debut for Italy, during a tense World Cup play-off. As reported by BBC Sport, according to Opta Stat data, he attempted more dribbles over distance than any other defender in Serie A. On top of that, his successful take-ons were the highest by any defender across Europe’s top ten leagues.

Guido Angelozzi, the former Cagliari sporting director credited with bringing him to the club, praised his character as much as his skill. “The first thing that struck me was his maturity. He is a very curious young man – always willing to listen, yet with a strong personality,” Angelozzi said to BBC Sport. According to Angelozzi, these traits should carry over well onto the pitch in English football.
What Comes Next for Chelsea
Attention will now turn to new defenders. As reported by BBC Sport, Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix is seen as a top target, while a move for Rayo Vallecano’s Pep Chavarria is also being discussed. Both moves would strengthen Alonso’s back line.
As reported by GOAL, agreements are nearing completion for two more attacking additions, with Emmanuel Emegha set to arrive from Strasbourg and Geovany Quenda from Sporting**.** Valentin Barco is also set to complete his own move from Strasbourg soon. On top of that, a versatile forward and a central midfielder remain on the club’s wish list.
Much, however, will depend on exits. Enzo Fernandez appears open to a departure, with Real Madrid credited with an interest**,** while Trevoh Chalobah has been linked with a move to Como. As reported by Fox Sports, the futures of Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap and several others remain up in the air, following a poor tenth-place finish last season.
