Speculation over Virgil van Dijk’s Liverpool future has gathered pace in recent days, with claims suggesting the Reds could be prepared to listen to offers for their captain during the summer transfer window.
The rumours emerged despite the Dutchman signing a new contract just over a year ago and continuously publicly declaring his love for the club.
Given Van Dijk’s status as one of Liverpool’s most important figures, the reports naturally sparked concern.
Earlier this week, Grame Bailey reported that Virgil van Dijk had attracted interest from several destinations shoud he become available.
Via a report on TEAMTalk, Bailey declared that MLS sides were admirers of the Liverpool skipper, while teams in the Saudi Pro League continue to monitor his situation.
Italian giants AC Milan were also credited with making enquiries, although the report stressed Liverpool were not actively looking to sell their captain.
However, those claims have now been firmly dismissed by reliable Liverpool journalist James Pearce, who insists there is no truth in suggestions that Van Dijk could leave Anfield this summer.
Via a post on X, Pearce wrote: “Virgil van Dijk is going nowhere. The LFC captain currently on holiday and then back for pre-season. New head coach Andoni Iraola counting on him for 2026/27 and suggestions that LFC would even consider any offers for the talismanic defender are wide of the mark.”
Pearce’s update provides significant reassurance for Liverpool supporters as Iraola prepares for his first campaign in charge.
The Spaniard is expected to lean heavily on the experience and leadership of Van Dijk as he looks to build his side ahead of another push for major honours.
Retaining the 34-year-old would always have been viewed as a priority given his importance on and off the pitch.
While Liverpool have continued to refresh their squad in recent transfer windows, Van Dijk remains the defensive leader around whom the backline is built.
Unless there is a dramatic change in circumstances, the Reds have no intention of sanctioning the departure of one of the club’s modern greats.
Instead, Van Dijk is set to report back for pre-season as planned before taking on a pivotal role under Iraola when Liverpool begin their 2026/27 season, bringing an end to the latest round of transfer speculation regarding his future.
