Liverpool legend Jurgen Klopp says he has enjoyed taking time away from the game — but he is now ready for a return.

Klopp is expected to take over from Julian Nagelsmann as Die Mannschaft's new head coach, with the German FA already having confirmed that talks are set to be held. The former Liverpool boss is thought to be open to the opportunity.

Leaving Anfield in 2024, Klopp had previously said that he had run out of energy and could no longer continue. He was replaced by Arne Slot, who was fired this summer and succeeded by Andoni Iraola, a year on from winning the Premier League title.

But having taken some time out and then taken on a much less demanding role with the Red Bull group, Klopp feels like his energy levels have risen sufficiently to make a return.

"The timing even now is not perfect because I am currently under contract with Red Bull, but it is still better than it has ever been," Klopp said on Magenta TV.

"When I stopped at Liverpool, I lacked the energy for even one more year with the club, and I’m more than recharged now."

Of course, with a national team job, the demands are much less than the day-to-day stresses of a club role. Klopp could start his Germany tenure with a Nations League clash with the Netherlands in September.

According to The Times, Klopp's old Liverpool right-hand man Pep Lijnders would be keen to join up with him again and move into an international coaching position.

The highly-rated Dutchman left Manchester City at the same time as Pep Guardiola this summer and is currently looking for his next role.

His latest stint as a number one, this time with Red Bull Salzburg, did not go to plan.

"Yes, I can confirm the talks," Klopp said a couple of days ago after Nagelsmann was fired. "Things moved pretty quickly. Julian stepped down. The DFB are looking for a successor and they’re talking to me.

"I'm under contract with Red Bull. I’ve said I’m interested in the talks. They will be intensive because this isn’t only about Julian Nagelsmann.

"I also have to speak with Oliver Mintzlaff. He’s my employer. We’ve already touched on a few things. I assume he won’t stand in the way. I’ve been there for 19 months. It was an intense time."
