Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal: Star unhappy at Newcastle
Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal: Something is shifting at St James’ Park. Newcastle United have a serious fight on their hands to keep hold of Bruno Guimaraes, with reports from FootballTransfers revealing the Brazilian midfielder is deeply unhappy with life in Tyneside. Arsenal have already smelt blood. Mikel Arteta’s recruitment team formalised their long-standing admiration with a verbal approach, followed swiftly by a concrete £60m opening bid.
Newcastle knocked it back. They insist their captain is simply not for sale. But keeping an unsettled player rarely works out well for the selling club.
The root of Guimaraes’ frustration lies in the boardroom. Or rather, the departure lounge. This summer has been a bruising one for Newcastle fans. Anthony Gordon has packed his bags for Barcelona. Sandro Tonali is off to Tottenham. Add that to Alexander Isak’s big-money move to Liverpool last summer, and Eddie Howe has seen the spine of his team completely ripped out.
Guimaraes is 28 now. He is a winner, the man who lifted the Carabao Cup in March 2025 to end the club’s 70-year domestic trophy drought. He looks around the dressing room and sees a squad going backwards. Howe couldn’t get them back into the Champions League last year after Isak left, and doing it without Gordon and Tonali looks like a mathematical impossibility.
Why Arsenal want the Newcastle captain
Look at the underlying numbers from the 2025/26 campaign. They are elite. In 29 Premier League appearances, Guimaraes racked up nine goals and five assists. That is a goal involvement every 1.8 games from central midfield. His expected assists (xA) data puts him in the top five per cent of all midfielders in the division, complemented by a tidy 86.17% pass completion rate and an average FotMob rating of 7.52.
He is at the absolute peak of his powers. He has a contract until 2028 on a hefty £160,000-a-week, but money isn’t the issue here. Ambition is. Arsenal just won the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final. The sporting contrast between London and the North East is night and day right now.
The player isn’t sitting on his hands. His agent, Alexis Malavolta, was recently spotted rubbing shoulders with Giuliano Bertolucci and Kia Joorabchian. Those two superagents practically have permanent desks at the Emirates Stadium. Crucially, Guimaraes gave Arsenal the green light to initiate talks before that first £60m bid went in. He is actively driving this.
Newcastle will demand astronomical money to even consider an exit. Chronicle Live reports that Arsenal believe a slightly improved £65m fee might do the trick, but Newcastle executives will want far more for a player of this calibre. The Daily Mail indicates a second, improved offer from London is imminent.

Arteta has two priorities before the window shuts: a left winger and a dominant central midfielder. Guimaraes is a perfect option for the requirements. Imagine a midfield pivot of Bruno Guimaraes and Declan Rice. It is a terrifying prospect for the rest of the league.
