Alfie Osborne looks set to become the second Chelsea signing of the summer. The 17-year-old defender has recently been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge as Xabi Alonso looks to bolster his options at the back.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Blues have reached an agreement with Hearts to sign Osborne. The journalist claims that Chelsea managed to fend off strong competition from several clubs across Europe for the Scotland Under-19s international, who is now set to sign a long-term contract after completing a medical.

Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports has since reported that the Blues will pay the Scottish outfit around £400,000. It's said Barcelona, Marseille, and Club Brugge, as well as other English clubs, were also interested in signing Osborne, but he chose to join Chelsea.

As it stands, it remains unclear whether or not the teenager will be integrated into the first-team, the academy setup, or sent out on loan. While higher-ups at Stamford Bridge work hard to get a deal over the line, Alonso has been preparing for the first day at his new job.

The Blues' manager will walk through the doors at Cobham training ground and officially begin pre-season preparations on Thursday, July 9. With the Chelsea backline in need of open-heart surgery, the Scot could very well earn a place in Alonso's squad next season.

So, with that being said, football.london has rounded up everything you need to know about Osborne ahead of a potential transfer to the Blues.

Who is Alfie Osborne?

Standing at about 6ft 4ins, Osborne is a centre-half who's been turning heads while earning his stripes in the Hearts setup. Last season, the teenager featured 28 times for the B team in the Lowland League, captaining the side towards the end of the campaign.

He won the Hearts B team Players' Player of the Year and Coaches' Player of the Year awards. Osborne, who can also play in midfield, also made four appearances for the Scotland Under-19s. One of those was a European Championship qualifier against England, where he faced the likes of Blues academy stars Jesse Derry and Shim Mheuka.

Why do Chelsea want to sign Alfie Osborne?

Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, and Axel Disasi, who spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham, face uncertain futures after falling short of expectations. That said, however, it's unlikely that Osborne will immediately become a fixture in Alonso's squad, so he could simply be a signing for the Chelsea Development Squad.

How much will Alfie Osborne cost?

Chelsea will reportedly fork out £400,000 to sign Osborne from Hearts. According to the Edinburgh Evening News, when Tottenham Hotspur signed James Wilson from Hearts on an initial loan in the winter transfer window, they agreed to pay a future fee of £2.5m in the summer.

What has been said about Alfie Osborne?

Earlier this year, Derek McInnes described Osborne as a 'natural defender' and 'Rolls-Royce'. During an interview with The Hearts Standard, the former Hearts boss, who has since been appointed as the new head coach of Rangers, provided a glowing update on the teenager's development.

McInnes said: "He's a natural defender, he's not a full-back, he's a centre-back, he could fill in and at centre midfield. Alfie's done really well. I thought he was great in the youth game the other night against Hibs.

"I thought him and two or three others stood out. I thought it was a strong team performance, and Alfie's obviously got good size and good confidence about him.

"We wanted him to, even if he wasn't going to be stripped, just come down and do the warm-up and just savour the atmosphere and make him feel a step closer to it as he is."

The former Hearts boss continued: "I've not seen enough of him as a midfielder. I can see why people think that might be where he might play because he's got nice feet and all the rest of it.

"I would rather we didn't shoe-horn him in anywhere else. He's a Rolls-Royce, he's a good size, and he should be able to use that size. He's a good player, and we're fortunate to have him."
