Chelsea are expected to make a second offer for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka over the coming days.
Granit Xhaka’s Sunderland future remains the subject of intense speculation amid reports Chelsea are set to return with an improved offer for the Black Cats captain.
New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is believed to be driving the bid to sign the former Arsenal midfielder after they worked together during a highly successful spell with Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen - and Xhaka is said to be keen to reunite with his old boss ahead of the new Premier League season.
However, as it stands, Xhaka remains a Sunderland player after an initial bid said to be worth £8m was rejected immediately by the Stadium of Light hierarchy as they reiterated their stance that the Switzerland international was not for sale. As reported by The Echo’s James Copley, Chelsea are expected to return with an offer ‘in the region of £10m-£12.5m plus add-ons’ - although that still falls short of the £17.5m Sunderland paid when they persuaded the midfielder to return to the Premier League after becoming a Bundesliga champions and German Cup winner during his time in Leverkusen.
The situation continues to dominated the headlines as business during the summer transfer window ramps up - and Sunderland are working hard to add to their squad as they prepare for a first ever venture into the Europa League after Xhaka played an integral role in securing an impressive seventh place finish in last season’s Premier League. But how would any potential move to Stamford Bridge impact on the transfer value of Sunderland and Chelsea’s squad and how do they compare to their Premier League rivals?
