Liverpool among 6 clubs linked to Mexico’s teenage prodigy Gilberto Mora

Liverpool have been namechecked in recent reports citing growing interest in Mexico’s 17-year-old wonderkid Gilberto Mora.

Mora, 17, became the second-youngest player ever to start a World Cup knockout game when he lined up for Mexico in their round of 32 tie against Ecuador.

The attacking midfielder plays for Liga MX club Tijuana and is widely regarded as his country’s brightest young talent, earning comparisons to Andres Iniesta.

Mora already has 11 senior caps and does not turn 18 until October, earning him a long list of admirers in the Premier League and across Europe.

The Mail reports Liverpool, Real Madrid, Man United, Man City, Chelsea and West Ham are “aware of the player’s abilities,” though the latter are considered outsiders.

The teenager only signed a three-year contract with Tijuana in June, but reports state he has a £20 million release clause to reflect the likelihood of a bid that will progress his career.

Mora is represented by Rafaela Pimenta, the agent of former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot and Man City‘s Erling Haaland, among others.

According to ESPN, Pimenta said Mora’s recent contract establishes “a clear pathway for the opportunities ahead.”

Moreover, a report in De Telegraaf, who have known connections to Pimenta and her agency, earlier this week also namechecked the Reds as an interested suitor.

Any prospect of a move to Europe will have to wait, however, as FIFA rules dictate that he can’t move abroad until he turns 18, which is in line with the player’s reported preferences.

Liverpool are, of course, an easy club to link any player with as it will always generate traffic, but it would be surprising if the club were not at least keeping tabs on Mora, especially if his release clause is as low as reported.

Who is Gilberto Mora?

Despite being only 17, the versatile midfielder has impressed with his composure at club and international level.

He stands at just 5’6″ (1.68 m) and is highly regarded for his vision and quality on the ball, which makes up for the physicality he is still lacking at his tender age.

Mora is comfortable in possession and progressing the ball up the pitch via his speed or by foot, and his tenacious spirit is what will attract clubs when it comes to the next step in his career.

He has started Mexico’s last two games in the World Cup and will be expected to keep his role against England in the last 16.
