I’ve Watched Liverpool Suffer Some Terrible Decisions—This Was Even Worse.

I’ve seen plenty of poor refereeing performances over the years.

As a Liverpool supporter, I’ve watched officials make decisions that have left me frustrated, bewildered and occasionally furious.

But after watching France against Paraguay, I genuinely think this may have been one of the worst officiating displays I’ve ever witnessed.

Paraguay’s Approach Was Expected

Let’s be honest.

Nobody expected Paraguay to make life easy for France.

They were always likely to defend aggressively, disrupt the rhythm of the game and use every opportunity to break up play.

That is part of tournament football.

Underdogs often rely on physicality and discipline to level the playing field.

There is nothing particularly surprising about that.

The Referee’s Job Is to Control the Match

What surprised me was how the match was managed.

In my view, referee Ilgiz Tantashev never established control.

As the game became increasingly physical, there appeared to be little consistency in how fouls were punished.

By the final whistle, France had received three yellow cards, while Paraguay escaped without a single booking despite repeatedly disrupting play.

Whether others agree or not, that balance simply didn’t feel right to me.

Consistency Matters

Supporters can accept mistakes.

Referees are human.

What becomes difficult to accept is inconsistency.

Players quickly recognise what they are allowed to get away with.

If persistent fouls or tactical infringements go unpunished, they inevitably continue.

From my perspective, that is exactly what happened.

Rather than calming the contest, the officiating allowed tensions to rise.

Liverpool Fans Know the Feeling

Liverpool supporters have experienced plenty of frustrating refereeing displays over the years.

Most fans could list several matches where they felt decisions consistently went against the Reds.

That is why this performance immediately reminded me of some of those afternoons.

Only this time, I honestly felt it was even worse.

The referee never seemed fully in control of the occasion.

World Cup Standards Should Be Higher

The FIFA World Cup is football’s biggest stage.

The officials selected to referee these matches are expected to be among the very best in the game.

That is why performances are scrutinised so closely.

When a referee struggles to manage a high-pressure international fixture, supporters are naturally going to ask questions.

In my opinion, this was one of those occasions.

A Frustrating Evening

France ultimately had to battle not only a determined Paraguay side but also what I felt was an inconsistent standard of officiating.

Others may see the game differently.

But watching the match, I couldn’t escape the feeling that the referee allowed far too much to go unpunished.

For me, it was a hugely disappointing performance from the man in the middle.

At a World Cup, supporters expect the highest standards from everyone involved.

Unfortunately, I don’t believe those standards were met in this match.
