3 Liverpool players step up pre-season preparations early with AXA return

Liverpool have already had three players report back to the AXA Training Centre ahead of Andoni Iraola‘s first pre-season.

The summer break will officially end on July 13, when players report back for training seven weeks after last season concluded.

Those involved in the World Cup knockout rounds will not be involved, with Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak expected to rejoin during the US tour.

But before Iraola and Co. get to work, Wataru Endo, Giovanni Leoni and Stefan Bajcetic have all been using the facilities at the AXA in recent days, according to the *Echo*‘s Paul Gorst.

Position Players Expected to Report Back

Goalkeepers Giorgi Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman, Armin Pecsi

Defenders Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni, Jeremy Jacquet, Milos Kerkez, Kostas Tsimikas, Jeremie Frimpong, Calvin Ramsay

Midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Trey Nyoni, Wataru Endo, James McConnell

Forwards Federico Chiesa, Rio Ngumoha, Jayden Danns

Endo’s presence is not a surprise after he shared a photo from outside the club’s training ground on Thursday afternoon with the caption: “Day 1.”

His return comes amid his ongoing recovery from an injury that forced his withdrawal from Japan’s World Cup campaign and later saw him announce his international retirement.

Leoni and Bajcetic, meanwhile, have been on long-term recovery plans after their respective seasons were ended due to injuries. They have been at the AXA at different stages throughout the summer.

The centre-back is on course to be ready for the first day of pre-season after an ACL injury sustained on his Liverpool debut in September, joining Joe Gomez and Jeremy Jacquet as senior options in defence.

Bajcetic, meanwhile, has not played a game in any capacity in 14 months, and it remains to be seen how involved he will be when Liverpool return to training.

He is into the final year of his contract and has been linked with a transfer this summer, though Liverpool could be eager to retain him as a homegrown player.

Those involved in the World Cup knockout rounds will report later, leaving the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong among the first senior representatives back.

Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa are also anticipated to be involved despite ongoing speculation over their futures.
