Everton have taken a giant stride forward in their summer plans after agreeing a full deal with Chelsea for the permanent transfer of winger Tyrique George. The Merseyside outfit have concluded a deal potentially worth £30 million, but it is still pending a routine medical and personal terms being finalized.
The 20-year-old England Under-21 international is well versed in Goodison Park, having been loaned out to the blue half of Merseyside for the closing months of last season. David Moyes handed him 11 appearances after arriving in January, and while he only started one game, his doggedness and willingness to work without the ball did not go unnoticed by the coaching staff.
Everton have sensibly restructured the deal after having an easy option to buy the exciting young talent in the first place. Chelsea have protected their long-term interests by including a 15% sell-on clause in the deal, and the Toffees will pay an initial £24 million with a further £6 million dependent on appearances and European qualification.
How Tyrique George’s arrival has reshaped Everton’s summer rebuild
Now George is set to be Everton’s next signing in a window that looks like it could be busy for Moyes. They have lured midfielder Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough in a move which could rise higher than £16 million. German midfielder Merlin Rohl has already signed a permanent deal from SC Freiburg after a loan spell on Merseyside.
George has long been regarded as one of the Blues’ most exciting attacking talents, but has been unable to establish himself in the first team at Stamford Bridge. The Chelsea forward has netted six times in 37 senior appearances for the club and scored twice in six caps for England at Under-21 level.
His exit has been expected for some time, with RB Leipzig considering a move last summer and Fulham almost bagging a deadline-day switch in September 2025 before talks collapsed at the last minute. But Everton appear to be taking a calculated risk by investing in a young forward who could blossom under patient tutelage and provide fresh competition out wide. If the remaining formalities go smoothly, then George will turn up for pre-season as a permanent Everton player, determined to repay the faith Moyes has shown in him.
