England are back in World Cup action tonight as they face co-hosts Mexico in the last-16 at the Azteca Stadium.
A lot has been made of the match and Mexico’s record at their home ground, as well as the altitude it is played at. Mexico have also impressed so far this World Cup, winning all four of their matches without conceding a goal.
England’s journey to the last-16 hasn’t been quite as smooth but they were able to progress out of their group as winners following victories over Croatia and Panama either side of a goalless draw with Ghana.
Thomas Tuchel’s side were just 16 minutes from exiting the World Cup on Wednesday as they trailled 1-0 to DR Congo for the majority of the match before a late brace from Harry Kane saw them progress and set up the last-16 meeting with Mexico.
Former Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon has dropped out of the starting line-up for England’s last two matches but came off the bench to assist both of Kane’s goals. Will it be enough to put him back in the starting line-up or will Tuchel turn to him as an impact substitute once again?
There is also a big decision to be made at right-back following injuries to Reece James and Jarell Quansah. James is a doubt for the match while Quansah has trained after missing the DR Congo match.
Djed Spence started the DR Congo match at right-back before midfielder Declan Rice slotted into the role for the closing stages as England turned things around.
The winner of tonight’s tie, which takes place in the early hours of Monday morning (1am BST kick-off), will face the winners of Brazil v Norway, which kicks off at 9pm BST.
