As the Indy reported exclusively back on May 18th 2026 the Vitor Matos Liverpool link was first observed with regards to Trey Nyoni nearly two months ago. We can refresh your memories below before bringing you the latest on this player.
It was very simple back in May, the Swans instigated talks with Liverpool regards the potential for players to come to the club with specific targets in place. One was Trey Nyoni, but there are others. For context on the immediate contact and those involved click on the link below.

With that in mind we are aware of alternatives for Matos over the coming days or even weeks. Liverpool are in two minds on any loan as you would expect and it was on Friday that we were told new manager, Andoni Iraola was open to ‘everything’ when it came to his squad. He wants a bit of time to assess everyone and talk to those who are on the brink of leaving (such as Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones, there are others) Plus staff at Liverpool are already seeing their new mentor strategically planning every aspect of the start of this new chapter. This will hold up any player transfers for sure.
There is another issue.
Other clubs are now alerted to the availability of Nyoni. Numerous across the Championship and interest has also been registered from foreign leagues. We are told it’s more of a case of what Iraola wants more than anything. Last season Trey was expected to kick on, he didn’t, but now there’s a new man in town that could change. Arne Scott just couldn’t see any value in Trey if his appearance stats for last season mean anything. Selected cup games returned little as did his appearances (6) in the Premier League. Very limited minutes too despite in February Slott stating he was looking at Trey and considering him for certain games. "Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni have had that and games like this could be an option, but it is about the right balance. We play a strong team and who to play is something to think about."
It’s key to note that Liverpool don’t return to pre season training until July 13th, it could be Iraola has had words already with Trey but the formalities of any deal were not approved as of Friday as far as we are aware. Only one source has stated that the potential for a deal has been discussed and a date for that to happen, that same source also stated that Liverpool would be open to a permanent deal. There is a belief there is room for that, and that a bid of around seven million pounds would secure him, the issue again is he is a Liverpool player with a whole host of people believing he is a real prospect for the future.
A loan seems more obvious but can the Swans manoeuvre further ?
Once a decision is made then the player can decide is the usual way at Anfield. (For loans) So, if there are a number of clubs preferred by the top brass then the player can make an informed decision based on his employers recommendations. The only other contentious issue is there is interest from across the Championship, hence the decision being two fold once a club or clubs are deemed appropriate. It was in the air as of Friday with little information available. We have sourced what we can, but these days it isn’t as simple as it once was. Especially going back before last season.
Thanks for supporting the Indy.
