'Understand...' - Journalist says Liverpool eyeing surprise swap deal to sign 'superstar'

Liverpool are looking to complete a major overhaul of their squad this summer for new manager Andoni Iraola, and that could see them get creative in the market.

The Reds finished fifth in the Premier League last season and sacked Arne Slot as a result, just 12 months after winning the title, and have appointed the Spaniard to try and get back to the top of English football.

Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate, and Andy Robertson have all departed on free transfers since the end of the season, while several other players are expected to depart as part of the rebuild. Spain winger Victor Munoz has arrived in a £35m deal after they triggered his release clause. But now the club are looking at midfield signings for Iraola.

Liverpool Eye Swap Deal for Adam Wharton

According to journalist Danny Gallagher, Liverpool are eyeing up a creative deal to sign Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton this summer.

The England international helped the Eagles to win the FA Cup, Community Shield, and Conference League over the last 12 months, and has gained a reputation as one of the best young central midfielders in the Premier League.

Palace have slapped a mega price tag on his head to try and ward off potential suitors, but Liverpool remain keen and are looking at ways to potentially lower that fee by including players of their own to go in the opposite direction.

One player who the club are looking at sending to south London is playmaker Harvey Elliott, who has returned to Anfield following a disastrous loan spell at Aston Villa in the 2025/26 campaign.

Iraola is understood to want to take a look at the England youth star in pre-season before making a final decision on whether he will be allowed to move on, or be part of the first-team squad once again, but it's understood that Liverpool are looking into the logistics of a potential swap deal, and it's described as something that 'could move quickly if all parties agree'.

Wharton Would Be Top Signing

Liverpool are in need of midfield reinforcements with the reality that Curtis Jones will be departing, and the addition of Wharton would be a genuinely top signing.

Able to play as a 6, the midfielder, described as a 'superstar', would be able to fit into Iraola's system well but also allow the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, and Ryan Gravenberch to play further forward where they usually are at their best.

Elliot's time at Anfield is clearly over, so getting him into the deal to lower the fee would be expert negotiating too, so this is one to keep an eye on.
