Liverpool has announced the winner in its countdown of the best players to wear the red jersey, with Steven Gerrard coming out on top.

Gerrard, Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Mohamed Salah and John Barnes were, in order of where they finished, inside the top five spots, with a combination of data and fan votes put together to compile the results during the close-season.

Ian Callaghan was 10th in the rankings, just behind Roger Hunt and Virgil van Dijk. Another legendary center-back, Alan Hansen, was seventh, in ahead of Graeme Souness. And in a special live broadcast on Sunday, the remaining positions were revealed.

Dalglish won the league six times with Liverpool and the European Cup three times. Gerrard was involved in a lesser side but was the key man as the Reds won the Champions League in 2005.

"I'm extremely flattered and humbled. Thank you," Gerrard said after the result was confirmed.

Salah left Liverpool after nine years this summer, drawing his time as a Reds man to a close having won the Premier League twice and the Champions League too.

"Unfortunately, the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell," Salah said in a social media message in March. "I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

"I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club. It's a passion. It's a history. It's a spirit.

"I can't explain it in words to anyone not part of this club. We celebrated victory. We won the most important trophies and we fought together through the hardest time in our life.

"I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the teammates, past and present."
